Wild In The Park

Alexandra Palace commissioned PlaySpace to develop, write and produce this 60-page activity book for children age 8+ and their families.

It explores the special place that parks can have in the lives of children in an urban environment. Often parks are the only places where they can enjoy unstructured play outdoors as well as experiencing nature, they provide a chance to learn about fauna and flora and how to respect the environment.

The book also includes maps and facts tailored to children visiting Alexandra Park, while also giving them activities that can translate to any other green space.

The book creation process

  • Creating the brief

Working with the Ally Pally Creative Team we created a detailed brief defining the goals of the project, audience, general content direction and initial look and feel. We researched production options and pricing to present a full project costing, including suggested price points to recoup production costs.

We then undertook extensive research about all things Alexandra Park and consulted with forest school and park experts.

  • Developing strong content

From there, we developed three different content approaches to choose from, including an overview of types of content - activities, fact pages, stimuli pages. Once the structure was agreed, we create a visual draft including the full content with design and illustration directions.

This was reviewed by stakeholders, local families and schools and their feedback integrated before finalising the content.

  • Creative Direction on design and illustration

We developed an illustration brief, researched potential styles and appropriate artists.

We appointed illustrator Kathryn Corlett to work on both design and illustration and worked with her to define the visual identity and branding. The book needed to complement existing Ally Pally branding yet bring something more tailored to the audience.

Illustration ideas and concepts were then discussed and tested before creating the final fully illustrated version of the book.

  • Taking the book to market

Play/Space dealt with all publishing administration, checked that all content was print-ready and proofed before going to print.

Alexandra Palace appointed Play/Space to publish this, their first book, which will be available for sale at Alexandra Palace and selected bookshops close to the park from December 2021.

We developed a marketing strategy, including web and social media content and live events, with a launch and workshops coming soon!
